Biography
Claude Lutzelschwab is adjunct professor at the Institute for Economic Research of the University of Neuchâtel. After studying economic and social history at the University of Geneva, he obtained a PhD in history from the University of Paris I Panthéon Sorbonne and in social sciences from the University of Lausanne in 2003 according to the co-supervision principle. He stayed as a visiting academic researcher at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London) at the Department of History on several occasions between 2004 and 2007.
He has been teaching economic and social history at the University of Neuchâtel in the Faculty of Economics and Business since 2004 and in Faculty of Arts and Humanities since 2010. He has been twice substitute professor at the University of Lausanne (2003-04 and 2012-14) at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. He has taught in leading universities in Switzerland (Universities of Geneva, Lausanne and Fribourg as well as the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne at the College of Humanities. Since 2014, he has also been teaching at Distance University (the Swiss Distance Learning University based in Valais) at the Faculty of historical sciences.
His other main past activites include the implementation and coordination of the modern history doctoral program (under the aegis of the Conférence universitaire de Suisse occidentale) between August 2010 and December 2013. He also worked at the College of Humanities of the Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne from January 2014 to August 2018. Among other tasks, he designed and implemented interdisciplinary education projects (co-designing of a minor program ; designing and conducting a semester project aiming at the development of technical solutions for the management of protected areas in West Africa in collaboration with various Swiss and foreing institutions).
His publications deal mainly with economic and social history of colonization in Africa, in particular colonial policy, migration and settlement issues, social processes and relations of production in agriculture.
