Organizer: Prof. Pilar Junier (University of Neuchâtel)

Content
Program (31.1.2013)
Omics approaches are changing the way we can study microbial ecology. Undoubtedly, the extraction, amplification and sequencing of genes (particularly the 16S rRNA gene) from environmental samples, initiated a new era of microbial ecology related to the description and study of uncultured microorganisms. This new era has advanced one step further with the direct sequencing of environmental DNA. Similar cases can be found in other areas including microarrays, proteomics and metabolomics applied to environmental samples.
The objective of this satellite symposium is to bring keynote speakers with large experience on the analysis of “omics” (i.e. metagenomics) to present and discuss their work to an audience mainly composed of PhD students in different areas related to microbial ecology.
Besides the presentations prepared by the speakers, the participants are expected to discuss and present the basis and their experience with different analysis software, as well as to have hand-on training on a particular selected analysis tool.
This satellite symposium will precede the SME 2013 meeting which is intended in particular for PhD students and young post-docs.
