Planning a career strategy - Networking & job finding methodology

Objectives

Students will learn about the various job-finding methods and understand how to develop a personal career strategy.

Dr. Pavel Kraus, AHT intermediation GmbH, Pfäffikon

Pavel Kraus, born 1955, holds a Doctorate from ETH Zurich and a master degree from the University of Chicago, both in the fields of geography.
In 1987 he joined Hoffmann-La Roche holding various positions in pharma marketing. As a knowledge networking officer he developed and implemented knowledge management methods in the Roche diagnostics division.
After leaving Roche in 2001, P. Kraus is one of the founding partners of the consulting company AHT intermediation. In addition he teaches at various universities for applied science.

Content and pre-course assignment

Students will identify their personal job options and expand their horizon regarding their future possibilities on the job market.

IMPORTANT: this course is meant for PhD students and Post-Docs that are in an initial stage of their projects (ideally 1st or 2nd year of doctoral studies, or 1st year of post-doctoral experience).

A round table will take place on the 2nd day (10.00-12.30) with the participation of:

  • Luca Rossi (Director Product Research & IP – Philip Morris International)
  • Christophe Randin (Professor at University of Lausanne, Collaborator at CREA and Swiss Federal Institute of Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), and curator at the Vaud Canton Museum and Botanical Garden, Lausanne)
  • Diana Santelia (Group Leader – Department of Plant and Microbial Biology – University of Zurich)
  • Cristina Tamò (Project Coordinator – Federal Office of Environment FOEN, EIA and Spatial Planning Section)

Pre-course assignment: developing and sending in the current version of CV before the beginning of the course to Dr Pavel Kraus (deadline 6 November).

Registration fee: Free.

Meals: Collective lunches are offered. No external individual meals reimbursement. Non-DPOB participants will have to pay 30 CHF for lunches and coffee break (cash) on the first day on the course.

Travel expenses: see reimbursement conditions
Only participants of the Organismal Biology doctoral program are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train (half-fare, 2nd class). Please send the original tickets (no copies, except for the AG travelcard) with the reimbursement form to Sara Santi.

  • This course is open to all PhD students, however until 12 October priority is given to "Interuniversity doctoral program in organismal biology" participants.
  • Post-docs are welcome as long as places are available.
  • Note that this course is meant for PhD students and Post-Docs that are in an initial stage of their projects (ideally 1st or 2nd year of doctoral studies, or 1st year of post-doctoral experience). We could reject registrations in case this requirement is not satisfied.
  • Minimum number of participants: 12, maximum: 16.
  • The effective cost of the course is approx. CHF 400.00 per person. Therefore, a waiting list will be prepared to ensure that there are no empty seats.
