How to obtain your first post-doctoral fellowship

Tuesday, June 1st, 2021

Venue: online!

Objectives

To learn how to develop competitive post doc fellowship applications

Speaker

  • Prof. Matthias Erb, Head of section Biotic Interactions / executive director, Institute of Plant Sciences, University of Bern

Content and pre-course assignment

The ability to acquire third party funding is essential for a successful career in science. For young scientists, the first opportunity in this regard is personal fellowships such as an SNF Mobility or Marie Curie Fellowship.

This workshop aims at training PhD students to become successful applicants for their first post doc fellowship.

The first part of the course covers all stages of the application process, including how to choose the right program, how to develop a competitive proposal and how to pass the interview.

The second part of the course focuses on the specific projects of the participants and provides hands-on guidance and examples on how to maximize their chance of success.

Note that the workshop is designed specifically for advanced-stage PhD students who are about to start or already in the process of applying for a post-doctoral fellowship. It is not an information session on general career opportunities in science.

Pre-course assignment (deadline May 9)

The participants are requested to start developing a post-doctoral application prior to the course and send the draft materials together with an updated CV to Matthias Erb before May 9. No fully developed projects are required, but the drafts should at least indicate the general direction and logic of the project.
