R: tidyverse for Data Science - joint with CUSO EE
4 & 5 November 2021
A workshop in collaboration with the CUSO Doctoral Program in Ecology & Evolution
Venue: University of Lausanne, with COVID Certificate
Trainer
-
Dr Jan Wunder, Wunder Consulting Wald ZH
-
Dr. Tina Cornioley, University Zürich
Objectives
Participants will be able to apply the R tidyverse, a powerful collection of R packages for data science, to analyse their own data sets.
Particularly, there are going to learn:
- the underlying common philosophy, data structure and grammar of the tidyverse packages.
- the application of its fast and efficient libraries for data management, high-level visualisation, functional programming, date-time parsing and many more applications.
Content
This two-day course for intermediate R users focuses on the tidyverse, a collection of R packages for data science.
We are going to focus on the two key packages dplyr
(“The grammar of graphics”) and ggplot2
(“The grammar of graphics”) plus several more such as purrr
(enhanced functional programming), tidyr
(helpers to create tidy data sets), readr
(fast & friendly data import/export), tibble
(modern data frames), lubridate
(easy and fast parsing of date-times) and forcats
(tools for working with categorial variables).
The course is a mixture between brief presentations, demonstrations (on-screen, using R and RStudio) and supervised exercises (“learning by doing”).
Requirements for attending and completing the workshop
Familiarity with R before attending the workshop or previous attendance of an introductory course to R.
For information: An Introduction to R 7-10 June 2021
Bring your own laptop to the workshop with recent versions of R and R-Studio installed. Make sure that your laptop is properly connecting to the University of Lausanne's wifi or eduroam WLAN.
Course completion requirements:
- Attendance - Presence and active participation is required during the entire course.
- Home work - Participants are required to hand in a home work consisting of several exercises before 26 November 2021.
Please, reserve a day after the course for the completion of the homework!
1.0 ECTS will be attributed only after the completion of the homework.
