Biography

Stephan H. von Reuß (born 1975) studied Chemistry at the University of Hamburg in Germany.

He received his M.Sc. degree (diploma) in 2004 for research focusing on sesquiterpenoids from liverworts, performed under the supervision of the late Prof. Wilfried A. König. He continued his work on volatile secondary metabolites and their biosynthesis in plants and microorganisms for which he received his Ph.D. degree (doctor rerum naturalium) in 2009 under the mentorship of Prof. Wittko Francke.

He then joined Prof. Frank C. Schroeder's group at the Boyce Thompson Institute - Cornell University (Ithaca, US) for postdoctoral studies and started to work with small molecule signals from the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans.

In 2012, he returned to Germany and joined the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena to establish his own research group focusing on chemical communication in free-living bacterivorous nematodes, that was hosted in the Department of Bioorganic Chemistry headed by Prof. Wilhelm Boland.

In 2016 he was appointed to full professor (professeur ordinaire) at the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he leads the Laboratory of Bioanalytical Chemistry and serves as the director of the Neuchâtel Platform of Analytical Chemistry (NPAC). His major research interests include the development of novel analytical techniques to decipher the ecology and evolution of secondary metabolism and small molecule signaling in nematodes. He is a member of the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE), the European Society of Nematologists (ESN), and the Swiss Chemical Society (SCS).
